Assisted Living at the Masonic Homes

The right support can empower maximum independence, which is always the goal at the Masonic Homes of California. With a plethora of activities, amenities, and community connections, our aim is to provide the highest quality of care so you can enjoy the highest quality of life.

Most assisted living organizations approach assisted living as a homogenous, “one size fits all” solution, when in fact, every person’s needs are unique to them. Perhaps someone simply needs more social connections or better dining options, but not medical care. Or, a married couple has differing levels of care needs and wishes to stay close. Every story is different, and so is our approach to empowering each individual with the right combination of resources.

The Masonic Homes offers a wide spectrum of living environments to provide the support uniquely suited to each person’s individual needs.

Pavilion: A Small House, with Big Results

Have you heard of “small house” living? Conceived in the 1990s by a group of dignity activists in the care sector, it is a more person-centered alternative to the institutional assisted living environment. They believed (and rightly so) that living in a medical environment simply because you need care is unacceptable.

Small house living offers 24/7 support for people who need high levels of care while prioritizing the human spirit. This means the community is set up more like a household, with a common kitchen, living room, and family rooms, and efficiently sized personal bedrooms. Plants, animals, intergenerational activities, and participating in the activities of daily life are at the core of the small house living philosophy. After years of intentional design, Masonic Homes opened its Pavilion building in 2021.

Here, we flip the model from being driven by the “medical model” to the “human model,” prioritizing person-directed care. Person-directed care means that we learn everything we can about each individual and we adjust to them, not the other way around, as it can be in other care settings. It’s what we call “steady care.”

Do you like to stay up late and then sleep in late? That’s fine—we’ll make you breakfast when you wake up! Like to doze under the sun in the afternoons? We’ll make that happen too. The Pavilion’s 24/7, steady care team is here for you.

The Historic Head and Adams Buildings: Living History

The Head Building is named for Ralph H. Head, one of the most dedicated and accomplished Masons in state history, who served for many years as president of the Masonic Homes Board of Trustees. Built in 1898, the central building, with its impressive brick façade, feels like an upscale, boutique hotel featuring gorgeous Masonic architecture, beautifully crafted woodwork, and stunning views. This setting is perfect for someone who needs light to moderate assistance. Independent living residences are also offered in the Head Building.

The recently renovated Adams Building offers three floors of upscale, assisted living apartment homes. In addition to open dining and living areas on the residential floors, the ground level serves as a vibrant hub for the entire campus community. Here, residents enjoy a spacious great room and bar, a library, a media room, and a billiards lounge, all designed for relaxation and connection. French doors and floor-to-ceiling windows create a seamless link to the outdoors, enhancing the open, airy feel. Conveniently located near the general store, dining room, chapel, lounges, and ceramics studios, the Adams Building is ideal for those who enjoy a lively, social environment while still valuing the privacy of their own personal space.
